Ama Chandra

Music – Baltimore

Singer/songwriter Chandra Brown known as Ama Chandra was born and grew up in Plant City, Florida. She received vocal training throughout her formative years through school and as a part of her family band. While in college she traveled the US as a part of a performance ensemble. Ama’s life continued to evolve as she embarked into marriage followed by travel to Brazil where she was immersed in learning the culture, language, and rhythms of South America. This time in her life birthed the study and love of healing traditions, Capoeira Angola, and learning the particulars of married life. Over the next ten years Ama ventured into songwriting licensing her song “I Wrote a Letter to Myself” to Queen Afua for her Medicine Woman CD. Ama also became incredibly proficient at playing the berimbau (musical bow) and transforming a room with her voice in the Capoeira Angola Circle. She did not truly find her musical calling until she began the journey of loving herself unconditionally which included the dissolution of her marriage. She committed to living out her purpose in order to give her only child the best example she could. Ama journeyed to Brazil once again and recorded her first project “The Brazil Experience.” Upon her return to the States, she quickly formed a band. Ama Chandra launched her music career in Baltimore’s vibrant independent artist scene. Her sound has been described as “refreshing” and with only a few years on the scene she has established herself as one to watch.
