Artsru - Expressive arts by Ruby

Visual Art – Omaha

Ruby Frimpong was born in Ghana West-Africa in 1992 but currently lives in the state of Nebraska. Growing up in a developing country, her love for art was discouraged so she decided to pursue a career in healthcare. After her degree in the United States with her bachelor’s in Science, she encountered severe depression and other life and health challenges which empowered her to pursue her passion for art. She opted to pursue her degree as a Mental Health Practitioner with the hope of using art to treat mental disorders in clients. Ruby experiences synesthesia and had mental health challenges which she currently uses art to manage since she did not benefit from medications due to the unpleasant side effects she encountered. With her bipolar mood disorder, she can experience different mood swings which she expresses herself through paintings from a variety of colors she connects with based of her moods. She finds art to be very calming and therapeutic in several ways ranging from the texture of an artwork to the color effects. In her artworks, she selects colors that combines to create therapeutic effects for her and the viewer. Ruby is currently in graduate school training to become a Mental Health Practitioner. She also works with the University of Nebraska-Kearney research team to develop policies to improve mental health conditions for people of diverse backgrounds and is hoping to get more research done on how art can be used for treating various mental health disorders through art therapy.
