Cerberus photography by Douglas White

Photography – Raleigh

I first picked up a camera while stationed in Germany in the early 80s. I discovered a calming joy in sports, concerts and nature/landscape photography. It became a form of therapy for me. A stress reliever from my job on the former communist border. When I came home from Germany I knew the direction I wanted my life to go and that was to become a newspaper and sports photographer. I also realized I really enjoyed botanical photography. I'm currently working on a collection of the "Faces of Little League" plus a collection of monochrome / duochrome flowers and finally a collection of local bands. Having learned photography using film I often wonder how we were able to work without digital cameras. On the flip side, I still love shooting with film. The last 20+ years have been a tumultuous time for me. I was diagnosed with a connective tissue disease, Lupus and fibromyalgia, that was just the start. Surviving a localized form of lymphoma, a car crash and cervical surgery started me on a mix of pain killers and antidepressants to help control depression & PTSD. I gave up shooting several times and finally called it quits in 2009 by divesting myself of all of my digital gear. That lasted for a couple of years. Then I bought new equipment and began shooting as much as possible. I did this mainly for myself. I finally decided last year that I wasn't going to let my illnesses define who I am. I have to make concessions in order to "coexist" with my medical issues. My life is possible thanks to my wife, my doctors and my cameras. I hope you enjoy my work.
