Gabrielle Meyerowitz

Visual Art – New York - NYC

Born in 1988 in a small village outside of New York, Gabrielle Meyerowitz has always found solace in colour and line, and has understood it as her medium. She studied painting and drawing in New York before embarking on a couple of assistantships, wanderings, continued studies in Paris, followed by an empty house, and a few residencies mostly in France and Europe. Although her work always stems directly from the Particular or real, it often appears abstract. “Every work of art is…a hieroglyph of ‘human’ experience” (Gottfried Richter.) Gabrielle is currently in the USA where she continues her work on her Scroll Series through a residency till spring 2015. Based on VALISE, the scrolls are a series of 5-7 large scale paintings. By turning fragmented memories (of VALISE) into an internal ‘still-life’, each chapter represents, or bears witness to a common mythology that is the accumulation of these specific memories. In the final exhibition of VALISE, she will ‘weave’ all separate chapters into a tapestry that can then be directly moved by viewers. Scroll 1 was created in spring 2014 in Spain, Scroll 2 this past summer in France , Scroll 3 in the US.
