Harmony (Art of Harmony)

Performing Art – Toronto

Born in Hong Kong, and raised in the quiet suburbs of Richmond Hill, Ontario; Harmony was brought up and taught to cling onto her cultural roots through traditional Chinese folk dance lessons as expected from her first generation parents. Within the past five years she transformed herself from demure Chinese folk dancer into nightclub “eye candy” inspired by the myriad of eye-catching performers in the nightlife industry. Taking the audience by storm and awe, it was through dance that Harmony was able to bridge her traditional upbringing to the clashing, unapologetic culture of the nightlife scene in Toronto. From 1999 to 2007, Harmony was part of a traditional Chinese dance company that stressed the importance of passing on knowledge and tradition of Chinese dance. It was during those years that she was taught many styles and techniques ranging from silk fan dancing, water-sleeve dancing, drum dancing, etc. To this day, there is no sweeter memory than the rush prior to getting on stage, lights bright in your eyes, costume on, ready to take the world on by storm. The “Art of Harmony” was inevitable as she found her way working as a graphics designer and model for local photographers and music events; to go-go dancer/freestyle performer in the nightlife and arts industry within the GTA. Meeting with other creatives showed and allowed Harmony the freedom to express and create outside of the expected and norm, outside of definition. Merging the intricacies of traditional Chinese dance techniques with the modern and hypnotic sounds of today’s electronic dance music scene; Harmony creates one-of-a-kind, hypnotic performances that keeps the audience curious for more. Her style of performance speaks from the in-between, the need to continue passing on tradition, but also to entice newcomers to the exchange of cultural experiences. With a knack for the wild, a heart full of tradition, and great love for the nightlife industry, she transformed herself into a one-of-a-kind freestyle performer, specializing in freestyle dance and silk fan dancing.
