Honeys Girl

Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

Growing up in Miami, Florida, Shayla spent much of her free time in coloring books and tracing images. In middle school she was introduced to painting through geometry. During her 7th and 8th grade years, she used geometric concepts and techniques to paint murals around her school and neighborhood. Near the end of 2015, Shayla decided to take her art more seriously and took to canvas. Currently residing in Washington DC, she saw the need for the arts in her community and especially in schools. Also completing 2 years of service in Americorps, she began to develop her art and it’s connection to service. Over this period she painted portraits of many students she may have worked with. As well as, a mural featuring a student as well as concepts learned over the course of the school year. Honey’s Girl makes use of vibrant colors and bold black lines to pull her subjects off the page. Mostly focusing on POC and personal expression. The handle, Honey’s Girl comes from her close relationship with her grandmother, Honey.
