Jonathas Nazareth

Visual Art – New York - Brooklyn

I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I have spent most of my life in the US. My work is an exercise in uniting the past and the present in an imagined universe. I draw from observation, art history, current events, and my imagination. I attempt to translate the world I see, personal mythology, memory, religion, race interactions, and gender identity into patterns. The images I am exposed to get translated into graphic motifs, which are later combined into a single theme in a painting. I work in a variety of media simultaneously, and as I develop a body of work, I have videos, photographs, and writings that go along with the each of the themes.
