Visual Art – Calgary

Michelle Hoogveld is best known for her distinctive use of mixed media, whose work explores the relational boundaries of mediums in a figurative yet abstract fashion. Her approach to painting is intuitive, yet intentional, utilizing mediums such as oil paint, spray, images and found objects to emphasize the realistic qualities of her subjects, but also to experiment with different methods of layering and abstraction. Drawing upon inspiration from a variety of sources, her aim is to tell a story, centring on personal interactions, habitual routines, the places we encounter and the connections we form with others. Michelle’s work can be seen in homes and businesses across North America and Europe, with a scope that includes indoor and outdoor spaces. She is currently on Calgary's Painted City Artist Roster and was also a part of the 2015 Calgary Utility Box Program Roster, an opportunity which has allowed for her works to be seen in public spaces within Calgary and has led to the creation of murals within local communities and restaurants. In the past, Michelle was selected to create the artwork for the 2014 Calgary Stampede Dream Home, was juried into the Western Showcase Art Auction, has shown in local galleries and shops, and has been published in both Press The Fashion Magazine and Standout Publications. Michelle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Design from Lynn University as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from The University of British Columbia.
