Nicole Elliott has an MFA from UNC-Charlotte. She discovered enamel in 2013 and fell in love the medium, starting her own jewelry line under the name Motley Me Designs. MMD creates contemporary, handcrafted, original enamel jewelry. She enjoys playing with patterns and color combinations, often using the reactions of the metal to the heat to capture an urban feel, sealed with transparent enamels. Starting with sketching different shapes, she looks to create a modern and interesting base. When enameling, she often follows her instincts, frequently deciding on color combinations rather spontaneously. Her enamels are lead-free glass that has been ground into a fine powder. She sifts the powder onto the cut and prepared copper piece, and fire in a kiln to approximately 1540 degrees until the glass is fused to the metal. There are several stages of firing, from a course, sugar-like finish to a smooth glassy finish. All the finishing elements are sterling silver. Each piece has both sides enameled and is fired multiple times to produce a durable, unique and whimsical piece of wearable art.
