WOOBLAR

Visual Art – Perth

I'm "Wooblar "otherwise known as Jordan Botello. I'm currently 21 and have been a street artist for 4 years. I recently received a scholarship for my illustration skills to go on exchange as international student at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences -School of Design, Germany, which gave me the opportunity to travel Europe. This exchange program not only helped further improve my street art, but also fundamentally helped me realise how passionate I am about what I do, and how excited I am to develop myself as as street artist here in Perth. Since returning to Australia I am trying to build upon this goal and further develop my career as a professional street artist/illustrator. I am currently studying photography and illustration at Curtin University and when I am not studying I also complete commissioned jobs or personal artworks. I have been a part of a number of local council projects for local Perth councils. Within my art I don't aim promote a specific political stance, ideology or comment. Instead I like to create pieces of art that allow people to view and admire street art from a different perspective. I want people to see the beauty behind the work instead of viewing it as vandalism, I want local Perth people to learn that street art and murals are more than "graffiti", they are visual and often beautiful expressions of creative ability which also helps forge an understanding of the artists producing them and their personal stories that motivate them. I am driven by a desire to have Perth people see their urban city as something both beautiful and colourful, so that we can learn to appreciate not only the breathtakingly beautiful Australian environmental scenery, but also more importantly our urban environments. With so many cities around the world increasingly embracing street art within urban spaces, from New York, to Hamburg, to right here in Australia in Melbourne, I would love for Perth to embrace this as well. I believe a current problem with street art in Perth is that whenever a street art festival occurs, its usually international artists being asked to paint, when it could and should be local artists who reflect local artistic talent right here in the very city we live in. Local artists need more opportunities, I honestly love everything about my passion for art, the experiences, the people I meet, the environment I work in, the whole thing as this is what I love doing.
