Ms. Kathy Hopkins-Davis, Founder of Book Angel 501(c)(3) This December 3rd, Book Angel is honored to be the beneficiary of the RAW Artists "Limitless" Showcase at The Epic, where Ms. Kathy will continue her mission, encouraging people to join her in building a world where every child can read and thrive. Ms. Kathy Hopkins-Davis, affectionately known as "Ms. Kathy," is the visionary behind Book Angel, a Fort Worth-based nonprofit dedicated to tackling illiteracy at its root by providing children and families in low-income and at-risk areas with essential access to books and learning resources. With a background in early childhood education and over two decades of teaching experience, Ms. Kathy has witnessed firsthand the transformative power of literacy. Her work is driven by her belief that access to books, along with a supportive learning environment, can instill confidence and a love for learning in children, ultimately shaping strong leaders and lifelong learners. Since establishing Book Angel as a formal nonprofit, Ms. Kathy and her team have distributed more than 250,000 books and over $2 million in essential items—ranging from educational materials and food to furniture and home goods—directly to families, schools, and community centers. This significant outreach reflects her commitment to "Advancing Sustainability. Conquering Illiteracy." Her passion for creating a world where every child has access to books and resources stems from personal experience, knowing the difference a home filled with books makes in a child's life. Book Angel not only supplies books but also empowers parents with the tools and knowledge to become their child’s first teacher. Ms. Kathy believes that literacy starts from birth, with parents engaging their children in reading, speaking in formal English, and fostering a love for learning. This holistic approach seeks to prevent the systemic issues that lead to educational gaps and high dropout rates by addressing them early in life. One of Ms. Kathy's driving motivations came during her graduate studies when she discovered a disturbing link between early childhood literacy and prison projections. Her research confirmed that reading deficiencies correlate with dropout rates and incarceration, underscoring the urgency of her mission. As a kindergarten teacher, she rallied her colleagues and community to turn around her school's literacy scores, eventually earning top district recognition. This experience solidified her conviction that literacy is the key to a brighter future for individuals and communities. Through initiatives like Book Angel, Ms. Kathy is calling on the community to support the fight against illiteracy. The organization invites volunteers, donors, and literacy advocates to #BeABookAngel—whether through book donations, volunteering, or simply reading with a child. With plans to expand their board and broaden their reach, Book Angel is seeking three new board members to join their cause, helping Ms. Kathy make literacy a priority across Texas and beyond.
