Visual Art – Toronto

I’m Jeanmarie Weatherhead, an emerging contemporary artist based in T’karonto and born in Guatemala. My artistic practice portrays the Anthropocenic reality of the more horrific parts of the modern age featuring my personal experience including the environment, mental health, culture, social/political agency, and gender roles. I majored in drawing & painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design and recently graduated with a BFA degree from OCADU 2020. Painting and collaging photographs became an outlet through which to express myself and to learn more about who I am as an artist. Reconstruction, deconstruction, life and death, immigration and migration, vaccines, and protesting become interlinked. They take me back to childhood memories, where I was blinded by fake news, which would eventually lead me to disappointment, through observing the cycle of damage and disrepair caused by human kind. My artwork is based on spiritual reality or a dream-like state within a landscape. Critical emotions such as anger, guilt, sadness, grief, and even happiness, I process into a painting. To cope with such emotions in reality is to paint the horrors of the modern age.
