Visual Art – Miami
My work revolves in illogical scenes, inspired by dark romanticism and all that surrounds me. Growing up in my hometown village of Masachapa, Nicaragua; the frequent blackouts are memories that never leave me. Sometimes the moonlight sculpted auras around the houses and the streets, other times it was just pitch black. Only the flame of the candle lights moving through the darkness, as people walked distantly in the streets was visible. Kids gathered around candles to narrate ghostly folk stories of our town. I was charmed by their eeriness and my mind raised demons before going to sleep.
At the age of 12, I came to the U.S. An English teacher introduced me the works of Edgar Allan Poe and had us recite one of his renowned poems, “The Raven”. His words moved me; there was something delicately imaginative, mysteriously hidden, visionary, and yet, blind in his work. I had this surge of inspiration, so much need to express, but wasn’t very eloquent with words. Soon, I enrolled in an art elective course in high school, drawing and painting 101. My art teacher/mentor introduced me to most of the artists that have now come influence me, including Salvador Dali, MC Escher, and Diego Velazquez. It was during that time I found I could satisfy my urge to express myself through the visual arts. Finding inspiration in the dark and obscure, I color the world I wish to see through
