Alessandra Singh
Visual Art – Toronto
Alessandra is a recent graduate with a major in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University. Growing up in a science-driven family, she did not begin truly focusing on art until after high school, when she fell in love with it.
Since moving to Toronto, Alessandra has found inspiration in the acceptance, the diversity, and the energy of the city reflected both in her life and in her work. Her Indian and Italian heritage plays a significant role in her exploration of identity, feminism, and self-expression - the primary themes of her work.
Her process is experimental, messy, and dynamic. Through much experimentation and growth, Alessandra developed a unique style of woven portraiture.
Her growing collection of woven pieces delves into the vulnerability and complexity of personal expression. The fragmented faces reflect coexisting traits that form an illusion of distorted identity. This allows the artist to cathartically present certain dimensions whilst concealing others, creating portraits that represent the intricacies of emotion and are true to self.
