I explore the comfort and familiarity of home through my personal memories and family history. When I started this exploration, I dove into my grandparents’ stories of rice farming, poverty, and military life. Their stories inspired me to reconnect with my Filipino roots, discovering the complexity of Filipino textiles and how traditional ideals and aesthetics of the Philippines were woven into my own experiences being born and raised in California. Growing up, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ homes. They would share their stories at the table with a warm cup of coffee (for us kids it was hot cocoa). In my work, the furniture and cups from their homes play a key part in sharing these memories. These objects inhabit the space with their own individual personality. I hope these cozy interior scenes bring pleasant memories of home to those who view them.
