Their work is about perceiving bad intentions from seemingly harmless situations. As they have aged, their view of the world shifted from that of a naive child to a skeptical adult. They assume events and interactions in life have malicious intent disguised as wholesome opportunities.
The themes of the circus reference their childhood perspectives of the world. The traveling circus is a spectacular realm of mystery, wonder, and magic. It is hidden from sight, under a flamboyant tent and running on smoke and mirrors to deceive its audience, present one weekend and gone the next. By interjecting questionable imagery into scenes of illustrated wonder, they are able to break down innocent situations and bring skepticism to viewers.
