Brian Bruce Contemporary Art

ARTIST STATEMENT: I view the world as a primordial system of order projected upon invisible frameworks that are in a constant state of flux – always responding to the evolutionary needs of life. There is a thin line between that which is physical and that which is not. My paintings represent the nonphysical relationships that give structure to the world we experience. An abstract vocabulary allows me to navigate the unseen and offers a means to explore circumstances associated with the process of evolution. www.brian-bruce.com BIOGRAPHY: Brian Bruce was born in Milwaukee, WI. and grew up in the outlying suburb of Menomonee Falls. From an early age, Brian viewed the world with an analytical mind. He was a sensitive middle child and found that drawing and coloring gave him reprieve from a world he often found chaotic. Initially studying architecture in college, he eventually concentrated on fine art and completed his art studies at the University of Minnesota in 1997. After college, with the fear of starving as an artist successfully instilled in him, Brian pursued a career in massage therapy until 2000. “That was the year when my compulsion to create art overpowered the stigma I felt in doing so. I look back now and realize that I really had no choice if I wanted to be happy. I was born to be an artist. It was challenging though, because I felt such a stigma surrounding the label 'artist'. I didn't realize when I was in school that I could define it for myself. I'm glad I finally snapped out of it. It feels so much better to live a life I'm passionate about than concede to fear.” Brian began his career painting figures, but now finds that his abstract work allows him to more effectively combine his love of color and structure with his fascination for metaphysics and the concept of evolution. He currently lives in Minneapolis, MN and works out of his studio in the arts district of Northeast Minneapolis.
