Comforter Fashion

Fashion – Phoenix

My name is Omolara Omotinugbon, and I am the designer and owner of Comforter Fashion (Instagram: @ComforterFashion). I’m from Nigeria and a member of the Yoruba tribe. I was raised with my three sisters (I am the second-born), in the city of Ibadan, Nigeria, Africa. I have always enjoyed making clothing, and I can remember hand-sewing little dresses for my dolls with a needle and thread when I was a child. It was always a hobby for me, and I spent hours making new doll clothing and gradually getting better at doing it. I learned quickly from others in the family or at church, and asked questions everywhere I went. As I grew older, it seemed that I was drawn to fashion naturally. Sewing and making new clothing was already my hobby, and living in the city exposed me to incredible fabrics and wonderful prints that I had never imagined. We lived in Ibadan, which is only 80 miles North of Lagos -- the massive port city on the West-Central African coast. With current population estimates of around 20 million people, Lagos imports fashion trends, textiles, colors, and designs from around the world. And it influences fashion around the world as well. A year ago, my husband and I relocated to the Valley of the Sun with our two children. I am working hard to share Africa’s booming fashion trends with my new family, the local artists and creative fashion people in the Phoenix area. I am loving it here! As a Christian, my style is somewhat modest, but definitely colorful and exciting. I make wedding and bridesmaid dresses, short dresses, skirts, shorts, pants, blouses, tops, wraps, and just about everything in between. I use all the latest, most amazing colors and fabrics direct from Africa. While my favorite color is purple, and I also love bright, colorful combinations. My advice to my fellow African designers is to stay focused, to not give up on their dreams, and to honor God in your work; through Him, all things are possible.
