Creative Currents by Robin L.H. James

Visual Art – Philadelphia

Creating art has been an enjoyable pastime since my childhood. Watching my mother sew, I began to learn how to sew, making toys and games at the age of eight. My educational experience has afforded me the opportunity to experiment, design, and formulate ideas with different media to further cultivate my talents as a fabric sculptures. My career as an artist evolved shortly after relocating to Northern Virginia in 1986. During that time, I was commissioned to create and produce stencils for a local advertising company, sound proof music studios, design clothing and jewelry for catalogs. As word quickly spread, I was in demand for private shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions. I received numerous awards which lead to a commission to create a few featured art pieces for the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts. My line of beaded leather bags, praise dance dresses, and wearable art clothing allowed me to become a featured designer and workshop instructor at the Smithsonian Institute and Museum in Washington, D.C. In 2001, I returned to my hometown Philadelphia and work as an art teacher for a local charter school. I have been partnering with local museums and colleges to implement various art curriculums and programs into the school. In addition, I am helping my students receive full and partial scholarships to their programs and hosting various events as a way to them gain exposure to their art. My work was recently exhibited at various art galleries, retail shops, and local restaurants like Amazulu At The Loft, The Crane Building, 2424 Studios, The Wine Cellar and The Tyme Gallery. In addition, three of my pieces were chosen for an exhibit held by Philly Side Arts to be auctioned off for an AIDS fundraiser, raising over $10K. I am also a member of the Living Felt Felting group where my felting work can be viewed on their blog.
