Photography – Calgary
Derek is a born and raised Calgarian who shares a true passion for both creativity and adventure. Growing up, when he wasn't taking long bike rides along the Bow River pathways in town or embarking on mountain trail adventures with his father, he was learning the artistic craft with his mother who showed him sketching, painting, and ways to think outside the box. Naturally he came to love exploring other worlds in fiction writing, movies, and video games.
In 2008, Derek took a step into the unknown, embarking on a week-long road trip with a good friend to see the wonders of Vancouver Island. The lush rainforest foliage and mesmerizing ocean shorelines inspired him to take up photography and capture the intricate patterns of nature.
This itch for adventure did not subside, and a few years later, Derek set forth on a 2 month backpacking adventure through Europe. Here he developed a true fascination with historic architecture and captured as many moments as his camera memory cards could afford. At this point things came full circle with a simultaneous appreciation for both nature and man-made design.
With a desire to utilize his creative talents in emerging technologies, Derek enrolled in the New Media Production and Design program at the University of Lethbridge in 2009 where he developed a more engaged personality and gained foundational knowledge to boost his proficiency in mediums including Graphic Design, Video Production, Photography, and Fine Art.
Post graduation, Derek has worked with musicians, tutors, models, and small business owners to help them boost their reach through logo development, social media campaigns, video content, and portrait photography. While this has afforded him great opportunities to become a part of his community, he still loves to make time for his craft free of constraints in the form of electronic music production, oil painting, digital art, and free-form photography.
