Dermot Smyth
Film – Boston
Although I am originally from Dublin Ireland, I have lived in the US for over 18 years.
I am a big advocate of the pedagogic application of film and have produced, directed and screened various short films that promote an ethical and reflexive mode of documentary film.
I have had the opportunity to teach film theory and film production, most recently for the New York Film Academy at Harvard University and currently at Acera School in Melrose MA.
I have written episodic content and worked in field production for various television programs on the Discovery and History Channels, and the Animal Planet.
Currently, I am directing and producing a documentary about the work of highly acclaimed American artist Lynda Benglis, who attained worldwide notoriety in the 1970s for her controversial Artforum Ad. I had the opportunity to screen a 25 minute edit of the film at the RISD Museum. I recently collaborated with ART 21 on their segment piece on Benglis for the ART 21 series that aired on PBS in March 2012.
Filmmaking is very much a collaborative endeavor, and I have been very lucky to work with, and meet some very talented people along the way. Any accomplishments I have can also be credited to the generosity of others.
