Visual Art – San Diego
Diego “Dos Pistolas” Garijo
Named after the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera and born in the same region of
Guanajuato Mexico. Diego was rarely seen as a child without his pencil and sketch pad.
He had planned to attend art college, but succumbed to negative influences after getting
expelled from high school for fighting. He was incarcerated shortly after. Upon his
release, Diego turned his attention to Mixed Martial Arts in an effort to stay out of trouble.
He reinvented himself as a professional fighter. Among other promotions, Diego fought
in the first season of Bellator where he was awarded the fight of the night for beating top
#10 Bellator contender Saad Awad. Diego went on to fight internationally and defeat
former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver, before retiring due to a severe eye
injury. In recent years, Diego has rediscovered his love of art as a way to deal
with all the negative emotions and frustrations of no longer competing as a professional fighter.
In 2018, bareknuckle boxing was legalized for the first time in America since
1889. After watching the first event on tv, Diego reached out to the promoter and was
able to get himself booked on the second event, BKFC #2. Despite being medically
cleared, but advised not to fight again due to the previous eye injury. Diego once again
received fight of the night honors, winning by KO in the first round after a heavy
exchange with his opponent. Diego will continue to fight until he is no longer medically cleared to do
so, after that he looks forward to a lifelong career as a full time artist.
