Photography – New Orleans

I am Amy James, a film photographer, who majored in painting and drawing, yet fell in love with the darkroom upon realizing it created as much of a challenge as an empty canvas. I create all of my photographs individually by hand, in a darkroom. The hands-on process of film photography is profoundly cathartic. Each step is a crucial part of creating the final image- the initial choice of when to release the shutter, followed by “the wait” to see if you “captured the shot” as well as the choice of which image best represents that moment in time. All are integral to the process of making the final image. Most of my work is, or has become, autobiographical in content....whereas I am a black and white photographer, yet Have experienced quite a colorful life. Some artist wear their hearts on their sleeves, I tend to wear mine on gallery walls.
