Visual Art – Kansas City

In high school I discovered I had a penchant for design and fabrication, but not so much for math and science. After struggling through my first few years of college I realized I needed to focus on my strengths, and find a way to make a living doing what I loved. I ended up graduating in 2010 with a degree in Theatre Design and ever since I have worked for one company or another designing and building custom set pieces/ decor/ furniture/ signage etc, culminating with the founding of my own company, Against the Grain, in the summer of 2012. I believe that we live in a \'throwaway\' society, where true craftsmanship is shunned for cheap and ready made furniture and decor. One of a kind artwork is looked over for the terribly impersonal factory prints we see on the shelves of big box stores worldwide. Rather than sit around and stew about how Wal Mart is ruining the world of the artist, I strive to do something about it. I believe convenience and low prices have made people forget what it means to own something tangible, something that reflects their essence, something that they can take pride in owning, and it is my mission to remind people of that feeling with my work.
