Visual Art – Toronto

My work pays tribute to the infinite variety of artistic expression throughout human history, from its earliest beginnings to its latest digital manifestations. Born in London, England, I become an immigré to Canada when I was 8 years old. I grew up in Montreal during the tumultuous events of the 60s and 70s, studying anthropology, linguistics and art at McGill University. During this time I travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, revelling in the vast and varied history and art of such diverse cultures. My paintings, which on the surface seem to represent the epitome of formal style and technique, are an attempt to capture the soul of the subject in such a way that they, and those who view it, will recognize something uniquely about themself. In the sculptures I go wild, generally starting with no firm idea of the end product and seeing what strange archetypal monsters come bubbling out of my id. As with any artist, of course, every piece is an exploration of my own mind, an attempt to find out what really makes me tick and ultimately, to the extent that other people respond to it, to discover what we all have in common.
