I explore the phenomena of modern media and celebrity as they relate to women under the male gaze. I select images from the traditions of early twentieth century cinema, Hollywood glamour and the A and B-list celebrities of today. Through these icons, I critique the vanity and artificiality of the genre. Through the media, this female iconography becomes a marketing strategy, resulting in ‘products’ that have little in common with reality. My intention is to explore and deconstruct the sexism of these images and the way they seek a kind of manufactured glossiness: lipstick, nails, hair, all carefully posed and airbrushed to vacuous perfection.
