Houl
Visual Art – Canberra
Wielding a marker like a sword, Houl is a self-taught artist who has carved a name for himself with clean, crisp lines, intricate details, and bizarre characters. Houl sketches, plans and paints as often as he can afford to in between a 9 to 5 job, and draws on literature and mythology for inspiration to create a vast collection of twisted characters and kinsmen who adorn the walls, doors, signs and stairwells of Sydney and Canberra. He navigates aerosol cans as easily as he does pencils, markers and ink, to display his work as stickers, paste-ups, canvases, murals and during live-painting events. He was the first ever winner of Secret Wars Australia in 2010 and more recently has had his artwork projected onto the National Library of Australia, The National Portrait Gallery, Questacon and The Museum of Australian Democracy as part of the 2013 Enlighten Festival.
