Richard Pfeiffer
Visual Art – Northern Rivers
Richard grew up on a vast hundred acre property in the heart of the granite belt, Queensland. As a child he ran wild in the rocky hills, collecting wood and interesting pieces of stone that he would take back to his fathers workshop. There, with the practical skills his father taught him, he would set to work transforming his treasures into artworks. Some 30 years later, Richards latest pieces are large and beautiful fire pits cut from industrial sized gas cylinders with 10mm thick steel and 3 dimensional wood light boxes carved from local Camphor Laurel timber. Using the colours of the sunrise he paints the backgrounds for the light-works in absolute detail so they glow in vivid perfection. The organic shapes he forms are then sandblasted to re-create the look of weathered and time ravaged materials. Through striking imagery and a sensitive approach, Richard captures elements of magic from the abundant beauty of the wild East Coast of Australia, harnesses it and brings it to us focused and raw.
