Visual Art – Gold Coast

Artists Statement: Using the diversity of my work my intent is to interpret what I see in a way that resonates with the viewer, creating an interaction between us through the subject and composition; whether a seemingly benign moment, a face and a personality, or something more complex and emotional leading me into an abstract composition. I was thrilled to be invited by RAWartists to exhibit in this group exhibition Verse. When deciding if I should bring a Singular body of work to the event, I felt that this was a time when I could rather demonstrate the diversity of my Art. I find it so interesting to work on numerous canvases at the same time across a wider and more challenging scope of compositions. It’s important for the viewer to be interested in the works, and by creating works in completely different directions from Narrative to Abstract I hope I have captured your interest tonight. Artist CV: Having studied the Arts at school Karen was always creative, being a keen painter, dressmaker and loved making beautiful designer knits during a time where she was inspired by the likes of Kaffe Fassett a Californian artist and textile designer. In the late 1990’s Karen attended Art School part time in Cape Town. It was a perfect part time opportunity whilst her children were young. This was a time when she became greatly influenced by impressionism, and seized every opportunity whilst travelling to attend major exhibitions. With this, a passion and fascination for painting in Oil took hold. During her attendance at the Judy Moolenschot school of Art in Cape Town all mediums were explored. Having exhibited in a number of local shows, her first major commission was for a Restaurant in Cape Town, a body of work which took 3 months to complete bright colourful fresh food images that were larger than life. One of her strengths is her uninhibited and confident use of colour; she strives to create an extremely diverse range of compositions, each time challenging her skills and techniques on a new genre. This can be seen in so many of her completed works which are vibrant and bold conveying emotion and movement and often an underlying strength. Having lived in the UK, South Africa and now Australia Karen is not only inspired by every day things and people, but the wonderful experience these different lifestyles and cultures have exposed her to. 1999 to 2006 Attended Julie Moolenschot School of Art, Margie Johnson School of Art, Marcell Lyon School of Art Commissions 2001 Cape Town Restaurant 6 large scale works 2002 Private commissions 2001 – 2004 Group exhibitions Julie Moolenschot School of Art Old Mutual Wine Club Greyton Gallery Veldrift Gallery The Framing Gallery Grovesnor Gallery Riebeeck Valley Hotel 2003 Solo Exhibition 38 Special Cape Town Galleries represented by: Hout Bay Gallery Greyton Gallery 2005 to 2016 Private Commissions Australia, United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, and Europe Competitions 2015 Entry in the Border Art Prize 2016 Currently living in QLD Australia
