Kevin McLaughlin Illustration

Visual Art – Chicago

Armed with a dark sense of humor and fascination with anatomy, Kevin McLaughlin illustrates small worlds that focus on the members that inhabit it. The penetrating stares of the characters are meant to engage the viewer looking for a silent interaction. The layers of texture, borders, color, shadow and grit are meant to sink you further into the visual. His tendency to study the details of a person or object considering that is what defines it, the intricacies. This includes facial expressions, movements and twinges that capture that singular moment you are looking at. McLaughlin mimics his way of viewing the world around him in the illustrations. McLaughlin’s influences come from a wide range. Movies, Music, Books, Comic book art, fine artists like Bosch & Dali as well as different time periods including Victorian, Art Nouveau, Early Christian, Pulp Art and Surrealism. Many people inject their own meaning into the visual which the creator of those worlds loves hearing. “It\'s fascinating to me when people tell me what the pictures mean to them. I love to hear how someone else interprets the illustration because it was created out of my own interpretation of memories, thoughts, and what I interact with in the world. It is difficult for me to see it any other way then my own. So it is interesting to hear what other people see them as.” Kevin McLaughlin originally hails from sunny Philadelphia where he attended Tyler School of Art, Temple University until he graduated in 2003. He currently resides in Chicago where he is also a graphic designer and art director.
