Visual Art – Vancouver
Born to into a Danish-Canadian home, Katherine spent her childhood in Wales, UK. After graduating from High School, she returned to Canada to complete her Bachelors degree in General Fine Arts at Emily Carr University. In her working life and artist practice, Katherine chooses to follow her curiosity, exploring different projects and materials as necessary.
For Nielsen, the key to understanding her current world is by examining what has been. Nielsen dissects familiar scenes from her memory using colour, texture and space to both express and reinterpret the built layers of emotional experience captured in these moments. She consciously chooses to exaggerate hues, omit or blur backgrounds and abstract figures to explore new ways of seeing an understanding these slices of time. By exploring the subject in this way, her hope is that the time worn stories will be viewed with fresh eyes, creating points of connection and reflection for her viewer.
