Malcolm Grieve

Photography – Northern Rivers

My name is Malcolm Grieve, and I was born in the lounge room on a farm in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. My father is a Romani Gypsy from Selkirk, Scotland and my mother a country girl from Illabo, Australia. Growing up on the farm is my foundation, and although I never felt the need to be a farmer I understand a good days work. At sixteen I started working for the Wilderness Society, which lead to three months of blockading (living in a 100 meter tall tree) in the Styx Rainforest in Tasmania. I studied Fine Arts at Newcastle Hunter St. TAFE, and then went where all the other artists go after school- into the fruit picking industry. I started traveling all over Australia, taking what work came to me, and enjoying the freedom of the road. When I was twenty-two, I took my first overseas step and went to visit my family in Scotland. On the way, I bought my first camera in the Sydney Airport. From there I have traveled all over the world and visited temples, climbed pyramids, enjoyed numerous pints in numerous pubs, and even sailed on a 54 foot wooden pirate ship built in 1935 from La Paz, Mexico to San Francisco, California.  One of my favorite things about photography is the stories that come with my pictures, the events that happened, and the lives of the people that continue to influence and inspire me.
