Visual Art – Detroit
Lauren McHale Mills (b. 1999) is a young artist living and working in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is currently being trained at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. She has been working professionally as an artist since the age of twelve. She began to be recognized due to an eye condition she has called Nystagmus, which renders her with low vision. Lauren prefers to let her work speak for itself. Nevertheless, her vision is a vital part of her voice.
Though young, Lauren has been working for nine years in her field, increasingly improving in skill and knowledge. She has attended summer intensives through Interlochen Center for the Arts, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the University of Michigan throughout her time in secondary school. She has also been showing and selling work consistently. Most notably to the likes of R&B singer, Jill Scott.
In addition to freelance work, commissioned pieces, and her online store, Lauren is currently working through ideas surrounding the processing of childhood trauma through portraiture- a tradition she is actively working to reinvent.. She is enjoying this current stage of development, as she thrives most in the midst of other creatives.
McHale is currently in the midst of working very meticulously and with great meditation to create and curate a cohesive body of work for exhibition. This collection of work will be completed by and shown in late April of 2023 at the Stamps School of Art & Design Senior Exhibition.
