Visual Art – Indianapolis

Mikayla Powlen is currently a graduate student attending at IUPUI and is pursuing her master's degree in Art Therapy. As someone who has not always been heard in the past, being able to have a voice allows her to feel valued and appreciated. Helping others has always been a passion of Mikayla's; but at the same time, she has always been very passionate about art. Working with ceramics has grown to be a tool for her to communicate how she feels. Art can be used as a way to express one’s self-motive and/or thoughts. It allows the capability of communicating with others without verbal expression. For some individuals, verbalizing what they are feeling internally is a challenge they can often find difficulty overcoming. Using art as a way to communicate your desires, interests, passions or life story allows those who have trouble speaking to communicate to those who want to listen and help. The process of making conceptual art started as a challenge but then over time, Mikayla has learned how to retrieve those desires, interests, passions, and feelings that she once held back.
