Visual Art – Houston
Nikki Hune is a visual and multimedia artist in mental health recovery, and began seeking abstract freedom through her own artistic expression. After experiencing a novel form of relief from chronic thoughts of suicide, she began encouraging artistic expression for those with mental illness in the community at large. In 2016, Nikki founded What it’s Like Project, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to removing the stigma of mental illness through art, education and community engagement. Since it’s inception, she has exhibited artwork at Signature 2019 in Dallas; Houston Grand Opera: Transforming the Mind & Spirit - An Exploration of Creativity; AXIOM in 2018 and EXPOSIS in 2017. Nikki has also created other artistic projects that focus on reducing mental health stigma, these include: radio plays, experimental videos and music. Working mostly with acrylic, oil and pastel on wood, she explores emotional creativity through her artistic release. In addition to her art, Nikki is currently a doctoral student at Texas Tech University.
