Beauty – Ottawa

Never did I think I would do anything related to makeup. But here I am, with more makeup than the average woman. I come from a medical background. I did Nursing, Paramedics and Firefighting out of high school. Now, medically, I teach First Aid. And it is from this teaching, that my makeup career started. Fake blood, latex and scar wax to do moulage in a first aid course is how it all started. I think that it is its these materials that most people start with. Well, we are way beyond those materials now. I now focus on Prosthetic fabrication and application. We use the same materials and methods as Hollywood. I work in film, TV, theatre, commissioned work and teach Special FX Makeup courses. Teaching brings me great pleasure. I like to teach people that if you truly want to be a SPFX Artist, you have to move away from the materials you are comfortable with and go beyond your comfort level. You have to learn how to sculpt, mould, learn the materials, paint, application and so on. I feel I am still learning. Just when I think I got a hold of things, a new material comes out, or there is a new way of doing things, etc. This profession is not unlike the medical profession. You have to always keep learning! You have to aways be researching. And above all, you have to love what you do. Even if it is 4am, and you have a mould to do, a job to paint and a life to juggle.
