Visual Art – Minneapolis

I have been doodling and making art since I could pick up a pencil and crayon, and made comic strips and doodles for much of my time growing up. However, I first became serious about making art and turning it into a career 3-4 years ago, when I decided to begin studying at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In school my main area of study has been illustration, although I have taken classes involving animation, figure drawing, and printmaking. My time in school and the people I’ve met have been most influential on my art in the past few years. This past year from January through April I studied at the Burren College of Art in Ireland and traveled in mainland Europe. While in Ireland, I experimented more with animation than I had in the past. My style varies from realistic ballpoint pen drawings to more loose and cartoony illustrations, and sometimes involves a balance between the two. I love the detailed line drawings of architecture by author and artist David Macaulay, and I am fascinated by the Prison etchings by Giovanni Piranesi. I am very interested in art that invokes a desire to explore the piece. I think this can be achieved through details that suggest a story – such as a diary sitting on a table, or the various expressions of multiple characters - and also through the quality of the line itself, which can suggest the character of the artist or the character of the subject that it is being depicted. I also enjoy making art that entertains with humor – this can usually be found in my more stylized illustrations. Much of my work can be found online at http://www.dylandavisart.com. There you can also find links to other sites that I post on. Also, credit for the current photo I'm using here goes to Drew Carlson (www.drewcarlsonphotography.com).
