My name is Emily Petiya, and I started Spacey Designs as a freshman at Colorado State University where I studied Apparel Design and Production. Spacey Designs started as a way for me to make custom costumes for my friends and myself. I have been cosplaying for almost 10 years now and sewing almost that long as well. As I grew as a seamstress I wanted to explore a way to help people with my art and talent and turned to Plus Size design as the answer. I decided I was going to be the first student in the design department to focus on the plus size form--which was not a picnic. When you work with plus size bodies, you need to really rethink the way clothing builds and the important parts of the body to highlight. I had to re-teach myself two and a half years of patternmaking and drafting because none of the formulas in my text books were working right but I finally got the hang of it. I absolutely love helping women in fashion and costume find clothing that fits them and makes them feel powerful!
