Photography – Salt Lake City

Hi, I’m Spencer. I am a fine art landscape photographer and videographer born and bred at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah. Growing up in Utah, I gained an appreciation for the outdoors at an early age. Whether hiking and camping in the summer or shredding with friends in the winter, there’s nothing more exhilarating, in my book, than being out in the wild exploring the beauty of Mother Nature. After graduating High School, I embarked on a two-year adventure working as a full-time LDS missionary in Hong Kong, where I discovered my passion for the Chinese language. In my two years in Hong Kong, I became fluent in Cantonese, made many lifelong friendships, and gained a deep appreciation for the Canton culture, customs, and the rich heritage of the Hong Kong people. After returning home from Hong Kong, I began working as a videographer and editor while continuing my education at the University of Utah, where I earned a BA in Chinese. It was not long after I returned home from Hong Kong that I rediscovered the beauty of the night sky while camping in a remote area in the Uintah Basin. I was utterly awestruck by the bright nebulous bands of the Milky Way suspended above the dense forest of aspens surrounding my small campsite. I realized that I had lost touch with the natural world during my two years in the fast paced concrete jungle of Hong Kong where the city lights outshine nearly every star in the night sky; it’s almost as if night doesn't exist in Hong Kong. After sunset in the ‘fragrant harbor’, the sky is perpetually shrouded in a thick, eerie haze so bright that it can even obscure the full moon. That night under the stars, I fell in love with the night sky — and I have been chasing the Milky Way ever since. There's a certain reverence in rediscovering the wonder of the stars — It fuels the imagination and recaptures a sense of childlike wonder. Since then, I’ve spent hundreds of hours under the night sky honing my craft in an attempt to capture that same sense of awe and wonder that captivated me. It certainly hasn’t been an easy process. Much like my experience learning Chinese, I have had to work out many things for myself simply through trail and error. Every shoot still presents their own set of challenges, but the process is all part of the adventure.
