Stuart Holland

My name is Stuart Holland and I am and artist based out of Boise, Idaho. Despite working in a range of mediums (ink, watercolor, woodcut, charcoal), my work consistently retains strong themes of exploring our natural world. Much of my work has been focused on ideas of biodiversity and the complex interactions of organisms that have given way to an infinite number of unique species. Within these bounds, my work creates narratives of these species in the midst of the violent and cyclical struggle for life and death. These narratives explore the changing roles of aggressor, victim, and witness that each of us assume as we participate in this natural struggle. Most recently my work has taken a different turn to explore ideas of timeless Light and Darkness, in both a physical and an existential sense. After a recent trip to Peru, meeting several shaman and participating in their various rituals and ceremonies, I realized just how connected these two realms are. CIMMERIA is the realization of a visual realm of timeless Light and Darkness that is dominated by mysticism. This body of work encourages the viewer to contemplate an ambiguous spirituality driven by an awe and insatiable desire to further understand the natural world we live in.
