Visual Art – Memphis
Artist Statement & Bio: Wendy Hailey
Wendy Hailey is an underwater artist from Memphis, TN. She has spent the majority of her career trying to capture the spectacular effects made by light source refracting on human skin when submerged in water. The figurative paintings she creates convey the complex emotions associated with being in bodies of water as well as lure the viewer into the sensuality of the experience.
Collecting memories and images from swimming pool waters to exotic locales, Wendy uses references from her own experiments with underwater photography to pull her compositions and color palette into place. Her style ranges in degrees of freshness and focus based on her own sense of urgency while in the act of painting.
Wendy Hailey received her BFA from the Memphis College of Art in 2002. She hopes to continue to explore the many new concepts and techniques that are continually introduced from such a fleeting subject of which is new enough that there are no master artists to lend a technical hand.
Wendy has spent her life exposed to the sun and water. Her manic lust for these elements is the heart and focus of her work and that desire is reflected in her compulsion to paint about it.
