Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

Jewel uses her work to manipulate everyday realities, visually seducing viewers. Instead of merely capturing figures, she takes on an innovative approach to portraiture. Interested in depicting experiences and other intangible emotional realities, her work is often set in familiar spaces, only to be challenged by the presence of the fantastic. With careful attention to texture, line and color, she intends to create a sense of visual empathy between viewers and painted figures. These combined elements serve as allusions to a variety of themes requiring further discussion within our community, such as black consumer culture, mental health, and the constant demand to always be “on”. By inserting otherwise unexpected imagery into paintings that would otherwise appear to be safe spaces, the artist hopes to create conversations that challenge the viewers’ perception.
