Music – Los Angeles

Emerging artist Zanya is a true embodiment of her surroundings. Her life as a musician began as a child, and flourished during her time as a music therapist at a hospital in San Diego. After moving to Los Angeles, her musical career started to take a new turn- she founded Zanya and shortly after began collaborating with bassist Patrick Reaves, and guitarist Drew Carsillo. During a year of writing with her band and playing the Southern California circuit, Zanya has popped up at LA venues such as The Satellite, The Hi-Hat, The Mint, Harvard and Stone, SoFar Sounds as well as appearances for San Diego based art production Cosmic Boogie. Zanya’s cousin, Gabriel Cantrell (drums), joined the band in early 2018 completing the lineup. Compelled to appeal to a broad audience, Zanya's debut release pulls influences from a colorful spectrum of sound — from the vibrant wave of early 1980s avant-funk, to modern day pop rock with a twist. The first single on this EP, “Kiss Me Right”, is a dynamic, blooming soundscape that resonates with elements from The Talking Heads to Shania Twain. The second song, “La Lengua” is where the band threw all the paint on the wall -this song is a movie score, meant to be synced with the audience’s own memories of desire and regret. The last song on the EP, “Yellow” speaks for itself when Zanya sing’s, “Nobody can fuck with my chill.” Zanya and her band mates push each other to create music that draws on all their eclectic fascinations. The result is a unique body of work with a common thread of multi-generational ambiguity that entices, charms, and occasionally, stuns audiences.
